CCEL Visibility on the National Front

For the second straight year, U.S. News & World Report ranked Michigan State University No. 1 in service-learning among public universities and No. 9 overall. This recognition for service-learning, known as community-engaged learning at MSU, shows the university’s commitment to integrating community partnerships with classroom instruction to enrich the student learning experience, teaching civic and social responsibility, and strengthening communities.

Community Engagement Scholars Program

The Community Engagement Scholars Program (CESP) at Michigan State University is a yearlong, cohort-based initiative co-led by the Center for Community Engaged Learning and the Office of the President. Since 2016, the CESP has supported over 100 undergraduate students, 24 community partner organizations, and 10 graduate coordinators, preparing student leaders to engage with their communities thoughtfully and ethically.

Fill the Bus and Stuff the Library Fundraising

Every year, two of CCEL’s programs with MSU Alumni aim to promote social change through philanthropy and giving. Fall 2024 marked our 16th annual Fill the Bus event to give local students and families an equal start to the new school year. With a continued need for new school supplies, our schools, teachers, parents, and students need our help. Supporting schools contributes to building a more equitable future by preparing all students to become informed, skilled, and compassionate leaders in a diverse world.

MSUvote continued to build on its mission to empower student voters and increase democratic participation throughout the 2024–2025 academic year. The committee’s work focused on nonpartisan voter education, coalition building, and fostering a culture of civic engagement across campus.

Spartan Volunteer Service Awards

The Michigan State University Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program exemplifies the power of community-engaged learning. During the 2024-2025 tax season, 52 MSU students became certified IRS tax preparers and contributed over 926 hours of service, offering free tax preparation to individuals and families across the region.

Transportation Support Award for WriteOn

As part of our commitment to removing barriers to community-engaged learning, CCEL proudly offers Transportation Support Awards (TSAs) year-round to faculty, staff, and registered student organizations. These awards, sponsored by Michigan State University Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU), have funded travel for over 1,300 students to participate in projects with community partners across Michigan and beyond.
