During the 2025–2026 academic year, Alternative Spartan Breaks (ASB), a registered student organization (RSO) advised by CCEL, engaged 108 students across 12 service experiences in 10 locations, including one international site. Programs spanned fall break (4-day), winter break, spring break, and seven weekend experiences, providing multiple entry points for student participation and leadership.

“Working with our community partner helped me understand that promoting independence and inclusion means meeting people where they are and respecting their autonomy,” says participant Sanvi Nagaram. Nagaram participated in the Life Without Limits weekend experience, which placed volunteers at an outdoor retreat providing activities and camp programs for individuals of all abilities. “This experience reshaped how I think about disability, community care, and advocacy, and it reinforced the importance of reducing inequalities through intentional, inclusive practices,” she says.

ASB also teamed with Spartans Rebuilding Michigan, another RSO advised by CCEL, on a Veterans Day service event. In November 2025, these organizations hosted “Paws and Patriots,” where participants created dog toys for Michigan Humane while engaging in meaningful reflection on service. Guest speakers Lieutenant Doug Ruffley and Detective Sydnee Zienta shared personal service experiences, and Chase, a service dog, offered a powerful reminder of the ongoing support provided to veterans.

“I wholeheartedly recommend participating in an Alternative Spartan Break experience,” says Life Without Limits participant Megan Riley. “The lessons learned through community immersion and organic reflection are important skills for meeting other community-identified needs in the future.”
