Step up and get involved as a crew member serving Earth as we take up shovels to plant trees and engage in various green sustainability initiatives to fight climate change! Here we can immerse ourselves in a community that gives witness to courage and resilience in the face of social and environmental adversity. By working alongside and listening to their stories and music, we learn from community leaders and neighbors how they step up and address the problems of their community and give witness to the love and compassion that sustains and allows us to flourish. We go beyond the actual service work and seek out the local wisdom that informs us of the why behind the poverty entailed in the environmental and social injustices we address. Ultimately as a crew we build together a bond of experience and story. Over the course of our service week this bond gives us hope, humor, wisdom, companionship and an inner resiliency to go back to our home communities with a drive and a sense of "Yes! We can!".

Alternative Spartan Breaks provides accessible, quality service opportunities, education about social issues, and exposure to diverse cultures and communities to promote the active citizenship of Michigan State University students.

Since 1991, Alternative Spartan Breaks has provided Spartans with quality service experiences around the country and the world. Modeled after the Citizenship Schools in the 1960's, Spartans are educated on a wide range of social issues as well as our 8 components before attending their experience. Through education and service it is our hope that our Breakers continue to give back to their communities and become community collaborators.

As an organization, ASB would like to express gratitude for the commitment of our Spring Weeklong Site Leaders. As such we are offering a $50 stipend as a token of our appreciation for the dedication put into serving this position. This stipend works to acknowledge and support the efforts of our site leaders to foster a collaborative and rewarding environment. Amounts correlate to different duties the Site Leader must complete. If all are completed, the full $50 stipend will be granted.
