Support and Resources for People and Communities Affected by LA Wildfires
The Center for Community Engaged Learning recognizes the needs of people and communities in California that have been impacted by wildfires, including some Spartans and their loved ones. The below list is intended to raise awareness of resources available to those affected by wildfires and amplify the expressed needs of those affected to members of the MSU community who wish to offer support.
SOS Fund - Spartans facing financial needs due to the effects of wildfires can apply to the Support Our Spartans (SOS) Emergency Fund. The SOS Fund was created to assist students with essential expenses during times of crisis.
Mutual Aid LA Network - Since March of 2020, Mutual Aid LA Network (MALAN) has kept Los Angeles-based mutual aid networks, people in need of resources, and people with excess resources connected and launched their own resource distribution projects. Mutual aid involves mapping the skills, interests, relationships, and other assets of a community to work toward a common goal and is a strategy of social change that is part of CCEL’s community engaged learning framework.
MALAN is hosting an up-to-date spreadsheet of businesses and organizations accepting donations of resources from community members in Los Angeles and providing resources. Some of these organizations, including MALAN, are accepting financial donations to provide their support. (Please note that CCEL is not a drop off site for donations.)
Free and Discounted Resources - The Los Angeles Times is hosting an updated list of resources in and around Los Angeles County available to fire victims. Read more on their website.
American Red Cross - The American Red Cross responds to disasters across the country and provides services such as temporary shelter, supplies, and financial assistance to fire victims.
