What is America Reads/America Counts (ARAC)?
Beginning as an initiative to address literacy concerns in the late 1990's, America Reads was created under the Clinton administration with the intent to direct college students to their local communities and provide academic support to K-12 students. Shortly after, America Counts was added to address mathematics proficiency and continue the aspirations of America Reads.
Here at Michigan State University, the America Reads / America Counts program is housed within the Center for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL) to provide academic support and mentorship to greater Lansing elementary, middle, and high school students.
ARAC Tutor/Mentor
Role Overview
In this role, you will work directly with K-12 students to help them improve their reading and math skills. Besides academic assistance, you will act as a mentor and supportive resource to the students you engage with at our various off-campus work locations. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference by providing support and guidance that helps students achieve success.
Responsibilities
- Assist teachers in classrooms during the school day or professional staff in after school programs. We offer both in-school and after-school opportunities.
- Develop and facilitate engaging lesson activities
- Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to students
This role is perfect for anyone passionate about education and enjoys working with children – regardless of your major!
Skills needed to succeed in this position
- Patience and adaptability
- Strong communication skills, willing to give and receive constructive feedback
- Commitment to helping others
- Experience in tutoring or working with youth is a plus but not required, training will be provided!
