PLEASE NOTE:  When you are able to register for a position, this is a weekly commitment for the day/time that you choose.  For instance, if you register for the Pharmacy Monday from 9a-2p, you will be committing to that day/time for the entire semester.

 

McLaren Pharmacy Volunteer

Volunteers assist the team in clerical tasks and simple medication preparation duties while gaining insight into the operations of the department.

Availability:

  •  Monday - Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM

McLaren PT/OT Volunteer 

 

Rehab specializes in helping restore mobility and physical function. Conditions treated include musculoskeletal disorders, neurological disorders, and Lymphedema. We are staffed with highly qualified physical and occupational therapists whose cumulative experience and training cover a wide range of conditions, diagnoses, and therapeutic procedures. Our patients have acute and chronic conditions, are post-surgical, and have sustained sports-related injuries. Approximately 30 patients are seen each day. We pride ourselves on personal and consistent attention to our patients, as well as hands-on individual treatment.

 

Duties may include: 

Duties may include PT observation for orthopedic, neurologic, and oncology rehab, OT observation for orthopedic and neurologic conditions, and providing miscellaneous assistance to staff as required.

  • Monday - Friday
    • 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM
  • Monday - Thursday
    • 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM

McLaren Endoscopy Volunteer

Duties may include:

The Endoscopy volunteer will assist the Endoscopy staff in providing patient care and comfort, assembling patient packets, cleaning gurneys, and transporting and discharging patients. Be available to assist with hospitality needs, i.e. getting water, coffee, etc., for patient, family, or guests. Deliver papers/charts to Medical Records, nursing units, or other areas as requested by staff. Direct patients, family members, guests, or general public to other areas of the hospital as needed. Assist with other duties upon request.

Availability

  • Monday and Tuesday 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM
  • Friday 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM

8 East Med/Surg Nursing Unit Volunteer

 

8 East is a 30-bed general surgery/trauma unit, serving a patient population of adults through geriatric. Patients on 8 East consist of telemetry general medicine patients with various diagnoses. In addition to the physical care provided, major aspects of care involve assessment of patient and family needs, pre- and post-op teaching, discharge planning, and pain management.

 

Duties may include:

  • Assisting the patient care staff in providing care and assistance to the patients and visitors of McLaren
  • Answering patient call lights
  • Cleaning equipment
  • Restocking shelves and passing water,
  • Emptying trash bags and passing/picking up food trays,
  • Restocking rooms and interacting with patients/families.

Availability:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday

McLaren OB/Nursery Volunteer

 

One of life's most special events for parents begins with the expert and tender loving care provided by the Birth Place staff and physicians. Childbirth, labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum most often occur in one room. Many patients prefer and are encourage in the natural childbirth process. However, if intervention is needed or wanted, epidural anesthesia and caesarian births will be the standard of care provided. After birth, couplet care allows mothers and babies to remain together as much as desired. McLaren encourages family-centered involvement to the degree to which parents are comfortable. Within the unit there are 16 birthing suites, 4 triage rooms, and 2 operating rooms. The Birth Place is staffed by physicians, residents, and nurses.

 

Duties may include:

  • Talking with family members and children of the patients
  • Transporting mothers in wheelchairs to the lobby as needed
  • Answering patient call lights, answering phones, and routing messages
  • Transporting specimens to the lab and retrieving medicine from the Pharmacy
  • Observing hearing tests with the permission of an adult volunteer or staff
  • Restocking/organizing the pantry, setting up new patient rooms, and distributing and picking up food trays
  • Assistance with clerical tasks such as filing and/or making information packets and charts

Availability:

  • Monday - Saturday - 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
  • Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday- 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM

McLaren Cardiac Step-Down Unit Volunteer

 

5 West is a Cardiac Step-Down unit with 16 monitored, inpatient beds that serve the adult through geriatric patient populations. 5 West specializes in the care of the post-open-heart surgical patient, and patients dealing with various other cardiac and respiratory disease processes. In addition to the physical care provided, major aspects of care involve cardiac monitoring, assessment of patient and family learning needs, pre- and post-op teaching, discharge planning, and pain management.

 

Duties may include:

  • Assisting the patient care staff as requested in providing assistance to patients and visitors
  • Cleaning equipment, restocking shelves, and passing out water
  • Emptying laundry bags, passing out/picking up food trays
  • Restocking rooms and interacting with patients/families
  • Assigned clerical duties, organizational tasks, transporting equipment between units, and running errands as necessary

Availability:

  • Everyday 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

McLaren PACU/SDS Volunteer

 

Many general, urological, and gynecological procedures are done as outpatient or same day admission surgeries, along with colonoscopies, tonsillectomies, minor eye surgery, and more. Nursing care begins by greeting each patient and preparing them for the surgical procedure, as the starting point for the patient in their perioperative experience. The pre-op area is a 20+ bed capacity unit.

 

Duties may include:

  • Assisting the patient care staff in maintaining patient flow within the unit
  • Providing care to patients and family members and assisting with patient transportation
  • Assisting/transporting patients to other departments, if needed
  • Processing carts - washing, making up with fresh linens, and putting in an empty room
  • Straightening up rooms/cubicles and returning unused instruments, materials, and supplies to their proper place after the patient leaves the pre-operative area
  • Helping at the waiting room volunteer desk

McLaren Emergency Department Volunteer

 

Unit Description: The ER treats approximately 40,000 patients annually. Special features include all types of major and minor emergencies including care of patients with cardiac, pulmonary, trauma, neurologic, and medical and surgical complications. McLaren’s Emergency Department is designed to efficiently evaluate and treat all patients, with a Triage room so those with life-threatening health issues are seen first.  They are a Level III Trauma Center with 3 major trauma rooms, 4 dedicated safe rooms, a decontamination room, 34 beds, and 10 exam rooms in vertical express complete the department. All physicians are board certified in Emergency Medicine, and affiliated with the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Michigan State University.

 

Duties may include:

  • Serving as an information liaison between patients and professional staff to help keep patients as reassured and informed as possible during an often stressful and difficult stay
  • Providing general assistance to emergency room staff
  • Assisting staff with transporting patients, running errands to lab, x-ray, pharmacy, blood bank
  • Stocking carts in rooms, stocking blanket warmers
  • Cleaning, checking linen/trash bags,
  • Answering call lights
  • Helping security
  • Other duties as requested.

Providing assistance to the patient and family is the main responsibility of the student volunteer. Students provide various hospitality services to patients (if medically approved) and families by providing warm blankets, soft drinks, ice water, coffee, magazines, and crayons and coloring books, and/or stuffed toys for children.

Qualifications and Skills Needed:

Maintain confidentiality; maintain McLaren guest relations standards; maintain professional attitude and appearance.
