Sumaiya Imad
Psychology, Economics
Sumaiya is a sophomore from Dhaka, Bangladesh, pursuing degrees in Psychology and Economics with minors in Law, Justice and Public Policy, and Entrepreneurship and Innovation. She envisions a world where human rights are universally protected, and social justice is at the forefront of policy-making. Her mission is to create sustainable systems that empower marginalized communities, particularly women, to break free from cycles of abuse and exploitation and become self-sufficient. Her passion for public policy and law influenced her involvement with organizations such as Youth Policy Forum, a policy discussion, research, and advocacy platform where she helped author a reform matrix alongside policymakers in Bangladesh, and her internship at Good Counsel Law, a prestigious law firm in New York, where she provides legal assistance to immigrants and supports social enterprises.
On campus, she is a part of the Honors College, Social Science Scholars program, Women's Leadership Institute, and serves as an E-Board member on the MSU Entrepreneurship Association. She is also the founder of her own non-profit that aids victims of trafficking to become sustainable business owners through a vocational training program, mental health workshops, and seed funding for their businesses. In her free time, she uses her green thumb by volunteering at Daniella and Charlie's Sunshine Garden, where produce is donated to women's shelters in the Lansing area. Through these experiences, Sumaiya has developed a love for community-based efforts and is committed to advocating for policies that advance equity and justice. She believes that true change begins with grassroots movements and is dedicated to amplifying the voices of those on the frontlines of these struggles. Sumaiya is excited to channel her passion into a career that bridges the gap between policy and practice, ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
